To optimize structural and energy performance, as well as material use, we created an algorithm capable of simulating the spheres in a variety of orientations and materials, informing the best possible design decisions.
The first challenge was to reduce glass in the construction of the spheres. A custom-built interactive program simulated the complex planar network of glass surfaces in 3d space. This measured standard sheets of glass for best fit and savings. The second challenge was providing enough light for the abundant plant life incorporated into the spheres to thrive. Measuring lighting needs in a variety of scenarios, the optimal orientation of the spheres minimized active energy requirements while maintaining the intended user experience.
