WOMEN’S HOSPITAL

Baton Rouge, LA

New Space, New Operations, No Problem

NBBJ worked closely with Woman’s Hospital to set up the organizational backbone needed to move decisively and safely.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Readiness Assessment • Operational Process Redesign • Patient, Department, Physician Move Management • Full-Scale Simulations

Challenge

A Magnet-designated, 4-star HCAPS, Level III specialty hospital handling almost 9,000 deliveries annually, Woman’s Hospital sought to expand from a 500,000-square-foot hospital to a new facility of more than 800,000 square feet. The move entailed new environments and procedures for decentralized nurseries, universal and shared operation rooms, open office workplace design, standardized single-bed patient rooms, single family care in the NICU and the separation of service paths.

Process

With the participation of the new building architect, contractor, movers, other consultants and various departments throughout the hospital, NBBJ’s transition services team facilitated an extensive operations redesign. Staff were trained and oriented to new processes, environments, roles and technology. Full-scale simulations proved invaluable to the effort of rehearsing and building confidence for the moving of all departments, patients, physicians and physical equipment.
