Challenge

The renowned Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, now named the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, was 30 months away from moving into its new 1.2 million-square-foot translational research hospital—the first of its kind for rehabilitation care—when the organization engaged NBBJ to deliver a safe and seamless transition for its staff and patients. In planning for the relocation, NBBJ was responsible for helping to realize the organization’s bold vision to focus on ability rather than rehabilitation.

Process

The transition services team mapped the client’s scope to NBBJ’s custom transition and activation processes for all phases, from initial engagement through post-occupancy stabilization. Guiding the hospital’s Activation Project Team, NBBJ engaged early and often, testing processes with project management tools while meeting with staff and community providers to execute simulations and conduct training sessions and orientation activities.
